Airport Operations

The Airport Operations department is a fast paced, dynamic environment that keeps operations at our airports running smoothly through planning, organization, and supervision.

Job overview and responsibilities

Operations Control Managers serve as the primary management control oversight of gate planning, daily schedule integrity, and flight process activities, all while ensuring local station requirements are met and United’s core4 principles are upheld. Operations Control Managers will be functioning interchangeably as planners overseeing the hub gating plan and as flight process overseers within a given area of responsibility (a zone of approximately 10-15 gates). They must be able to consistently manage both controlled and uncontrolled operational environments while making informed strategic and tactical decisions. This individual has decision making authority and will apply proven communication, analytical and problem-solving skills to help identify, communicate, and resolve issues, to maximize a positive customer experience.

  • Facilitate a teamwork environment to accomplish corporate and employee expectations
  • Direct peers and other leaders to collaboratively set operational priorities, with an emphasis on decisions rooted in core4 values, to reach the best outcomes for the company and customers
  • Lead station performance with focus on Turn Compliance Index (TCI) metrics
  • Drive positive Net Promotor Scores (NPS) by making customer experience focused decisions and supporting accurate communications
  • Monitor and review real time operational key performance metrics to deliver valuable business insights, metrics, and goals
  • Encourage a heightened focus on the safety and security of our customers and employees
  • Create hub gating plans, to include next day flight gating, that meet operational, customer, and employee needs and adapt them as needed to dynamic changes in the operational environment
  • Partner with local station and Network Planning in developing future flight schedules
  • Engage with NOC Dispatch, Ops Managers and regional carrier Duty Managers regarding real time updates to the hub schedule and notable flight-level events
  • Coordinate with Aircraft Move Team to ensure safe and timely moves
  • Liaison with airport authorities and government entities to promote company priorities
  • Monitor and communicate weather and field conditions during irregular operations
  • Preplan and actively engage stakeholders to develop risk mitigation plans and make tactical operational decisions as needed
  • Monitor flight activities within zone (including pre-arrival, arrival, servicing, and departure activities) and engage with other team members as needed to proactively resolve operational challenges
  • Ensure accurate flight following (FLIFO) information is maintained and communicated
  • Cover the duties of Manager – Station Operations Center on a temporary basis as needed

Required

  • Bachelor’s degree and/or related field experience in an airline operational environment
  • 2+ years of management experience in airline operations
  • Extensive knowledge of operations, management and logistics
  • Proven track record for decisive action backed by strategic planning, continuous improvement, analytical thinking, goal-directed leadership and service-oriented performance
  • Must be flexible to work all shifts, including holidays and weekends
  • United will consider applicants with criminal histories consistent with the Fair Chance Ordinance
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States for any employer without sponsorship
  • Successful completion of interview required to meet job qualification
  • Reliable, punctual attendance is an essential function of the position

Preferred

  • Bachelor’s or higher degree
  • Experience working with operational programs such as Real Time Stands, Unimatic, Volare, and similar programs
  • Experience in schedule design, schedule planning and gate planning
