Full Job Description

Seeking Spanish-Bilingual Preschool Teacher (Full Time, Part Time, and Substitute Positions)

Our School:

Escuelita del Bosque was founded 6 years ago with the specific intention of creating community around the vision of starting a Spanish-immersion school that would support the identity of all children – with a particular focus on children of color – within a creative, thoughtful and joyful educational experience.

Based on our deeply held belief that children learn best when they are actively engaged in challenging projects that take as inspiration their own interests and questions, our teachers will follow the process of emergent curriculum to support student learning. Within these inquiry projects our students will gain the opportunity to become skilled at expressing their ideas and collaborating with others through engaging in meaningful conversations as well as through the use of a broad spectrum of symbolic languages – such as drawing, writing, drama, sculpture or dance.

Teaching Position:

We are looking for a lead preschool teacher with an extensive understanding of child development who loves children, is passionate about teaching and believes deeply in our school vision – and who would be excited to have the opportunity to help shape and develop a quality Social Justice Program, Reggio-inspired, Spanish- immersion preschool program. All of our co-teachers collaborate closely to plan and implement our program, with an emphasis on building supportive colleagial relationships based in friendship and trust.

Our program is based on the philosophy of Forest Schools. We spend every day in a nearby urban redwood forest. While our children certainly do learn a lot about the environment, our focus is not on environmental education. Rather, our program is about fostering a deep relationship with a special place in nature that nurtures our children’s self-confidence, creativity, curiosity and sense of compassion. We are looking for a teacher who can model for our students how to interact confidently, respectfully and playfully in the wilderness irregardless of weather.

Requirements:

-BA in Early Childhood Education or related field (or in the process of completing studies- preferred but not required)

-3+ years of experience teaching in a preschool setting, preferably at a Forest School or a school based on a Reggio Emilia, emergent curriculum, or play-based approach

-Fully literate in Spanish, with native fluency.

-Passionate about teaching and about collaborating with colleagues to continually learn to support children’s needs and interests with refined skill.

-Deep understanding of or connection to the racial/ethnic/cultural identities of our students who are of African-American, Latino, Afro-Latino, Native-American and Asian-Latino heritage.

-Open-minded and already an ally (or willing to learn to be an ally) to all of our families including LGBT families, single-parent families, mixed-race families and families created through adoption.

-Confident and comfortable in the wilderness, preferably with experience in wilderness skills and knowledge of the environment.

-Extensive experience in the arts – either visual or performance – preferably with experience integrating the arts into teaching young children.

-Life-long learner who already demonstrates the practice of continual skill development through attending workshops and keeping up on new literature in the field.

-Eager to attend professional development workshops with colleagues.

-Patient, kind, loving and firm – and a model of the values and skills that Escuelita del Bosque represents.

-Skilled emotional coach for young children

Hours and Compensation:

Full time with scheduled time for documentation and planning each week.

Our school has an extended school year that runs from early August to the end of June. Our school calendar for teachers includes all national holidays as well as a 2 week December break, and 2 weeks of vacation in the spring. Summer break is the month of July with the option of working our Summer Camp Program

Salary commensurate with experience with the opportunity to advance each year on a salary scale that recognizes years of service to the school and professional development.

The excitement and satisfaction of participating in a grassroots effort to create an exemplary progressive, Spanish-immersion, Reggio-inspired program focused on community building and social justice.
