Reports to: Deputy Executive Director for Finance and Administration
Location: Location will be a maximum of three days in person and two days remote per week with travel to the headquarters office in New York City and the satellite office in Washington, D.C.
Starting salary range: $110,000.00 – $130,000.00
GLSEN works to create safe and affirming schools for all students, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity, or gender expression. We have been doing this work since 1990, and we are the only national organization dedicated to transforming K-12 education systems to affirm LGBTQ+ students, particularly those who are trans, nonbinary, Black, Indigenous, people of color, people with disabilities, and from other communities that experience marginalization. With 44 Chapters in 40 states across the country, we work at the national, state, and local levels to form GSAs (Gay Straight Alliances or Gender and Sexuality Alliances), supportive networks of educators and other adult allies, develop inclusive curriculum, and pass policies that prohibit victimization, including discrimination, bullying, harassment, and punitive discipline that puts young people at greater risk for entering the school to prison pipeline. Our work has produced measurable improvements in the lives of LGBTQ+ students in the United States and internationally and helped establish new norms of safety and affirmation for LGBTQ+ students in K-12 schools.

The Opportunity
We are hiring a HR Director to join us in advancing a culture of inclusion focusing on retention, recruitment, employee relations, and the continuous development and evolution of our equity and inclusion journey. The HR Director will position racial equity and inclusion central to the work at GLSEN, knowing that HR done through an equity and inclusion filter holds both institutional and cultural change.
The Director will report to the Deputy Executive Director for Finance and Administration with additional reporting responsibilities to the Executive Director and Chief of Staff. The HR Director will collaborate closely with the finance and administration teams and staff across all Departments. This position is both a strategic and hands-on role that provides full-cycle human resources support to the GLSEN team. This role is critical in executing our people initiatives, providing great internal customer support and driving HR functional excellence and process improvement.
The HR Director is responsible for creating a positive and inclusive employment experience for all GLSEN employees and members of our volunteer Chapter network which includes talent management, human resources operations, and processes that facilitate meeting the unique needs of GLSEN’s diverse constituencies. The position requires cross-functional collaboration, process improvement, data analysis, and problem solving. This position is a member of GLSEN’s Director’s leadership team that also serves as a support function for all Departments.

  • In collaboration with the Executive Director, Chief of Staff, and Deputy Executive Director for Finance and Administration, develop and implement a strategic HR plan to promote behaviors, culture, and competencies needed to achieve organizational mission and goals;
  • Monitor and ensure the organization’s compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and recommended best practices. Advise and present solutions to Executive Director, Chief of Staff, and Deputy Executive Director for Finance and Administration on adjusting for changes in policy, practice, and resources.
  • Develop, maintain, and review formal HR policies and procedures contained in the Employee Handbook and elsewhere, ensuring equity in recruitment, compensation, promotions, and performance management;
  • Recommend, pilot, implement, and evaluate new approaches, policies and procedures to effect continuous improvement in HR Department efficiency and impact;
  • Foster a culture that builds trust and accountability through strong leadership, counsel, and people management that reflects GLSEN’s values, especially Racial, Gender, and Disability Justice;
  • Provide strategic input on organizational development, workforce planning, organizational structure, positions;
  • Responsible for developing and implementing programs for professional development, including training for managers, and promotional pathways;
  • Supports people managers to provide constructive and timely employee performance evaluations and handle discipline and termination of employees in accordance with organization’s policy;
  • Oversee Employee Relations, including confidential and sensitive personnel issues that require follow-up and consultation with outside consultants and legal counsel;
  • Manage GLSEN’s compensation and benefits, including tactical and strategic management of a transparent and equitable compensation philosophy, structure, pay policies, bonuses and raises, and a competitive and legally compliant benefits package;
  • In collaboration with the Finance team, manage the organization’s staffing budget, the HR department budget, and provide strategic input on cross-functional duties such as payroll;
  • Lead the HR team with a focus on individual and team development and coaching to create a collaborative environment that develops strengths, improves weaknesses, and encourages creative problem-solving; and
  • Contribute to exceptional employee experiences throughout the employee lifecycle including through structured recruitment, onboarding, ongoing engagement, and off boarding processes.

HR Operations:

  • Work with the Executive Team to create and execute an intersectional equity program that advances racial, gender, and disability justice outcomes at GLSEN. This programming will build opportunities for staff engagement on strengthening organizational culture;
  • Monitor compliance of employee experience functions with applicable laws and regulations including: COBRA, Worker’s Compensation, OSHA, EEO and FLSA;
  • Administer benefits program and compliance;
  • Administer payroll and related processes;
  • Maintain employment records and ensure critical conversations and milestones are well documented and archived; and
  • Design, conduct, and analyze employee satisfaction surveys and implement strategies based on insights.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains HR staff;
  • Oversees the daily workflow of the HR Department;
  • Provides constructive and timely HR employee performance evaluations;
  • Handles discipline and termination of HR employees in accordance with organization’s policy; and
  • Manages external HR consultants, third party administrators, and vendors.

Minimum Requirements and Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in business or a related field preferred;
  • At least seven years of human resource management experience required, 10+ years preferred;
  • Experience in leading and executing strategic planning, talent management, and/or business development strongly preferred;
  • Deep understanding of Racial, Gender, and Disability Justice is required;
  • PHR/SPHR Certification is beneficial;
  • Excellent interpersonal, analytical, and conflict resolution skills that include a demonstrated ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions;
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills that include a demonstrated ability to read, analyze, and interpret documents such as safety rules and procedural guidance;
  • Ability to write routine reports, correspondence, and procedure manuals;
  • Ability to speak effectively before groups of stakeholders and employees;
  • Strong supervisory and leadership skills are required;
  • Demonstrates sound judgement, high integrity, and utmost respect for confidentiality;
  • Thorough knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations across states and other jurisdictions;
  • Thorough understanding of employee development from recruitment through off boarding;
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite. Experience with human resource information systems (HRIS), applicant tracking systems (ATS), and other relevant HR software is required;
  • Experience building and improving internal business practices in a growth environment;
  • Proven track record of employee development and satisfaction; and
  • Proven results when creating and deploying strategies to recruit, attract, and retain the best talent.

Caitlin (or Caitie) has a PhD in Developmental Psychology with a portfolio in Women’s and Gender Studies from the University of Texas at Austin. She has experience teaching, evaluating, and conducting research in schools of all levels. Caitie’s research specialties include the experiences of transgender and nonbinary youth, LGBTQ+ youth in sports, and elementary education. Before GLSEN, Caitie worked as an Evaluation Analyst at the Austin Independent School District and she has taught at the undergrad and preschool level. Outside of work Caitie loves live music, attempting complicated and new recipes, and women’s soccer.


Joseph Kosciw, Ph.D.

Dr. Joseph Kosciw is Director of the GLSEN Research Institute. GLSEN is recognized worldwide as an innovative leader in the education, youth development and civil rights sectors fighting to end bias-based bullying, violence and discrimination in K-12 schools and promote a culture of respect for all. For nearly two decades, the GLSEN Research Institute has supported the organization’s mission by conducting original research on issues of sexual orientation and gender identity/expression in K-12 education and evaluating GLSEN programs and initiatives. The Institute also provides technical assistance to local GLSEN chapters and other safe school advocates in the U.S. who wish to conduct research on LGBTQ student experiences, and houses GLSEN’s international initiatives which provide technical assistance to NGO and education leaders on LGBT issues in education across the globe.
Dr. Kosciw has a Ph.D. in Community Psychology from New York University, a B.A. in Psychology from the College of Arts and Sciences and an M.S.Ed. in Psychological Services in Education from the Graduate School of Education at the University of Pennsylvania.
Dr. Kosciw trained as a family therapist and has worked as a school counselor and psychoeducational consultant in elementary and secondary schools. He has been conducting community-based research for over 20 years, including program evaluations for non-profit service organizations and for local government. Under his leadership, GLSEN Research focuses on understanding the school experiences of all students, specifically as they are related to issues regarding sexual orientation and gender identity/expression, the school experiences of LGBT parents, perceptions of educators and school administrators regarding school climate, and the utility of school- and community-based efforts regarding bullying and harassment and efforts to create safe and affirming learning environments. GLSEN’s research is widely used for education policy advocacy as well as commonly cited in public media regarding LGBT student issues and school safety.
Kosciw’s work has been published in diverse scholarly and practitioner journals, including the Journal of Youth and Adolescence, the Journal of School Violence, and the Prevention Researcher. He also serves on the editorial board of the Journal of LGBT Youth: The Interdisciplinary Quarterly of Practice, Research, Policy, and Theory. He has also appeared on numerous national television and radio programs as an expert on LGBT student experiences.
In addition to his passions for community-based research, Dr. Kosciw is passionate about dogs, Eurovision, and Ukrainian pop music.

They are now a student at Harvard University, a Point Foundation Scholar, and a GLAAD/Teen Vogue 20 Under 20 Honoree.


Michael Rady

Michael Rady (he/him) is a queer educator, organizer, and reader. Michael believes radical transformation is needed in American education to deliver equity for all learners, especially BIPOC students and LGBTQ+ students. Before joining GLSEN, Michael was a third-grade teacher, curriculum writer, and Senate education policy staffer. Michael’s involvement in LGBTQ+ inclusive education started when he was asked to lead the LGBTQ+ staff community group for a network of public schools in the Northeast. Interest in the group grew immensely: it increased to over 500 members, marched in pride parades, and transformed internal policies for LGBTQ+ staff and students. In 2018, Michael joined GLSEN’s Connecticut chapter to launch the Rainbow Library, a program that sends queer-affirming books to schools. Since then, the program has grown to thousands of locations in dozens of states. He sees the Rainbow Library not only as way to help youth access queer-affirming literature, but as a bridge to other LGBTQ+ supports and policy changes. Originally from New York, Michael currently splits his time between Nashville, Tennessee, where his partner and their dog, Reese, reside, and Cambridge, Massachusetts, where Michael is pursuing a Master of Education at the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Indie has over 10 years of experience working directly with youth in various way, from case management with homeless youth to community organizing development of queer and trans students. They have a passion for making mediocre art and cuddling with their adorable fur-babies.

Ms. Tuero is also a board member of Friends of Gilgal Sculpture Garden, working to preserve public art in Utah. Growing up in rural Ohio, Lyndsey knew a more just, loving, and liberated world was possible, even if she didn’t understand how; as an adult they understand that building that world requires community, action, anti-racist practice, and a lot of humility. Using practical, learner-centered approaches, Lyndsey partners with organizers, artists, academics, faith leaders, and educators to facilitate practices that invite all to get more comfortable with discomfort in order to build solidarity and courage. Lyndsey brings nearly 15 years of anti-oppression training, program design, and coaching focused on growing queer liberation and reproductive freedom through multi-racial organizing centered in iteration, experimentation, and healing. They were one of the founding directors and board members of Nashville Launch Pad, a LGBTQ+ affirming emergency shelter for youth 18-24, and serves on the Board of Directors for SisterSong Women of Color Reproductive Justice Collective. Lyndsey is southern by the way of y’all, perpetually curious, and camp kid at heart (with over 20 years working collaboratively to design camp and youth leadership experiences).
